As We Are Now (PDF)
Difficulty: Advanced
Duration: ca 7”
As We Are Now is a dynamic and expressive work for six percussionists that reflects a deeply personal snapshot of my inner world during the time of its creation. Written in a period marked by both creative clarity and emotional unrest, the piece captures a complex state of being—equal parts inspired, indifferent, and unsettled by broader world events and my own evolving artistic journey.
Rather than adhering to traditional formal structures, As We Are Now unfolds as a linear narrative, carried forward by perpetual rhythmic motion and ever-shifting patterns. This journey-like form invites the listener to be swept through a vivid tapestry of percussive textures and grooves, where each moment leads organically into the next. The musical language here, while reflective of my compositional voice and background as a percussionist, is crafted with accessibility in mind—opening the door for emerging performers to engage deeply with the expressive and textural possibilities of percussion ensemble music.
This piece is dedicated to the extraordinary students of the Wakeland Percussion Program, whose energy and musicianship brought the work to life, and to their outstanding director, Brian Teed, whose dedication to his students and to the art of teaching continues to inspire me and many others.
