Cinematic II is the second work in Keck’s ongoing series The Cinematics—a collection of modular works for marimba and electronic tape that explore the intersection of concert percussion and cinematic sound design. Each piece in the series functions as an independent musical world while remaining part of a larger sonic landscape. The works are intentionally modular, allowing performers to present them in any order, creating unique concert experiences depending on the chosen sequence.
Scored for two mallets and electronic tape, Cinematic II embraces a darker and more aggressive sound world than its predecessor. The rhythmic drive of the marimba acts as the central force of the piece, interacting with an electronic environment inspired by the textures of classic rock and metal—distorted electric guitars, heavy drums, and gritty synthesizers. The result is a raw and dangerous sonic atmosphere where acoustic percussion collides with the energy and weight of amplified sound.
Throughout the work, the marimba functions less as a lyrical instrument and more as a percussive engine, generating momentum through layered rhythmic figures and evolving textures. The electronic tape expands the palette around the performer, creating an immersive soundscape that blurs the boundaries between concert music, film score, and modern production aesthetics.
As part of The Cinematics, Cinematic II invites performers to shape their own narrative by choosing how it exists within the broader series—whether as an opening burst of energy, a dark central chapter, or a climactic conclusion.
