PANDORA is a dramatic and emotionally charged solo work for marimba that follows a linear arc inspired by the myth of Pandora’s box. Written as a metaphor for the delicate balance between devastation and hope, the piece explores the tension between curiosity, consequence, and the enduring presence of light within darkness.
This piece was commissioned by Michael Lee-Smith with a consortium of generous contributors, including John Dawson, Sunmin Shim, Harrison Gelber, Sebastian Havner, Andrew Emerich, Michael Erdman, John Wayne-Duke, Sarah Burke, Mihail Babus, Brian Teed, Adam Davis, Nathaniel Holman, and Louis Raymond-Kolker.
PANDORA is dedicated to my best friend, Michael Lee-Smith, whose artistry and deep emotional connection to music continue to inspire me and so many others.
