Roots of Bloom (PDF)

Commissioned by Louis Raymond-Kolker and the High Point University Percussion Ensemble, Roots of Bloom was written with the intention of expanding the intermediate-level percussion ensemble repertoire while maintaining artistic depth and expressive power. With accessible instrumentation and carefully considered writing, the work was designed so that any school ensemble—regardless of resources—could bring it to life without limitations.

At its core, Roots of Bloom follows an arch form that gradually unfolds over time. The piece begins with a small, delicate idea—like a seed or root quietly taking hold—and grows into a full, blossoming sound world. This musical blossoming represents not only the natural process of growth, but also the creative journey of nurturing new ideas and giving them space to flourish. The work is both rewarding for performers and engaging for audiences, inviting everyone into its gradual transformation.
